Environmental and Wastewater Surveillance Working Group
The Environmental and Wastewater Surveillance (WES) Working Group within the GenEpi Network serves as a collaborative platform to strengthen and harmonize efforts in this emerging field. Its objectives include mapping the current landscape of environmental and wastewater surveillance activities across the network, fostering synergies between ongoing projects, and creating a forum for sharing results, best practices, and technical approaches. In addition, the WES Working Group works to develop recommendations for integrating environmental and wastewater surveillance into public health preparedness plans and to curate training resources that can expand capacity across Africa. These efforts are closely coordinated with existing global initiatives such as the PHA4GE WWS sub-working group, the Global Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance Consortium (GLOWACON), and WHO’s International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN), ensuring alignment and integration within the broader international surveillance ecosystem.
